Saudi Woman Arrested for Flouting Womens Driving Ban

Manal al-Sherif, a woman in Saudi Arabia, brave enough to flout the existing driving ban on women drivers there, has apparently been arrested. Although it is not officially 'illegal' for women to drive in Saudi Arabia, it is made impossible by the inability of women to obtain a license to drive.
Manal al-Sherif filmed herself driving in the presence of some women friends and posted this on the internet-she has since been remanded in custody for 'violating public order'.

Something is definitely happening in the world of cars-(and it's not all Top Gear, Mach 1 and Grease Nipples)...Whilst Damien Hirst is pumping out £900 spare wheel covers, a lot of women are beginning to realise that there's more to driving than just having to spend half your hard earned cash at the pumps each week. Many women see their car as a handbag on wheels. Ugly Betty!

The time has come to wave goodbye to my gorgeous Betty Beetle-she is going back to the mothership after two years of hard graft spreading the Me-Mo word. In that time she hasn't put a wheel wrong-she's seen me through snow storms in Yorkshire, tumultuous winds in Wales and traffic jams in Devon, has dressed in drag to pretend to be a pink car in the annual Pink Car Rally (nobody noticed you weren't pink Betty) and shown her rear end bumper to many a White Van man (only in passing, you understand).

The most depressing part has been having to strip her of her glorious colours (photo 2)-she is now a nude Betty (after two hours of removing her stickers with the help of a hairdryer)- to reveal the comparatively Ugly Betty underneath (photo 1)-and also to reveal a host of tiny dents in the car roof (£360 quids worth!) caused by conkers falling from a tree outside our house. (Ouch-and you never said a word!).

Bye bye Betty- I'll miss you!...But then again- I'm looking forward to the Golf 1.4 TSi that's coming on Wednesday! xx

The noise from the engine was now so bad that even turning the radio up full blast couldn’t drown it out- there was nothing else for it... Mo was going to have to bite the bullet (and bonnet) on this one- and go to the local greasepit garage (otherwise known as The Three Daves) to get it sorted.
After much teeth air-sucking- (enough to create a black-hole type vacuum, causing, Mo could swear, spanners, spotlights and even a few car jacks to gravitate towards Dave’s massive inhalation) a diagnosis was upon us......”It’s yer Big End, love...It’s gone!”
With a quiet grin, Mo stole a sneaky look over her shoulder into the grimy mirror, delicately enhanced with Jodie Marsh type lookalike studies of the human form (great on anatomy- these Daves)....What the hell was he talking about?- Mo’s Big End was still there!...She really was going to have to step up the Pilates and jogging this New Year.
(Mo was only joking though, she really did know that her Big End was the connection between the conrod and the crankshaft-Ha!)
“What can I do about it?...Can I cover it up with a few Me-Mo stickers?” Mo pleaded.
“It’s beyond that, love. A good mate of mine has just managed to sell her car (a lovely blue Beetle)- but the bottom line was that the purchaser wanted to keep the pink Me-Mo polka dot car seat and steering wheel covers in it....! A Gal with a Need for Speed!

I (Ruthie) span a few wheels yesterday on the track at Thruxton circuit, courtesy of Red Letter Days...the wheels in question belonging to a fantastic blue Ferrari F430 (see below-and my navigator is not asleep...he's obviously just swooning over my brilliant cornering!)...I know now, what a fantastic secret those petrol-head boys have been keeping from us all this time (move over boys-you've been hogging this one for far too long!)...She (Fiona Ferrari) is strong, responsive, sensitive to the touch (in fact, everything you'd wish for in a partner!) and she seems to hug you, just as she hugs the road...for the first time ever, I felt like a car was an extension of me (sorry Betty Beetle Luna 1.6!)...Blimey, can't believe I'm waxing so lyrical about a car...but, it was a truly exhilarating experience and one I'd highly recommend to all you power crazy gals out there!

Just a minor hitch today, on the motorway from Arles to Barcelona, when a nasty red light came up on the dashboard...everything was OK though, after we'd given Christine a drink of water...(I now even know where to put brake fluid, which is quite an achievement for somebody who has a phobia of even lifting a car bonnet!).After four long driving days, covering seven countries, and at least 1,400 miles, Christine is finally at her destination- awaiting pick-up from a friend's son and his mates, from Barcelona airport....We love you Christine, and we'll miss you!

Christine really had a chance to spread her wings yesterday- about 120 miles of mountain bends followed by a couple of hundred miles on the Cote d'Azur motorway, passing Nice, Monaco and on to Arles, in the French Camargue.
We are on our last leg(s?) today- zooming straight down to Barcelona and the airport...where Christine will be getting some new owners, who will hopefully bring her back to England in all her glory (stickers and all!)

Christine Does 'The Italian Job!'

Christine has done us proud yet again...we left Switzerland to cross the San Bernadino Pass into Italy (as in 'The Italian Job') in pouring rain, buffeted by icy winds and snow (photo to follow), and she still managed to get us into Turin in time for lunch! She's now having a breather at a ski resort in Italy (and so are we) until tomorrow morning, when we set off for the South of France (we're trying to steer her clear of the casinos in Monaco).

Christine (our old banger) sends her love from all of the above countries-she's carried us through French torrential rain, Belgian downpours, Luxembougeoise drizzle, German sunshine and Swiss mist, in a mere ten hours- and she's still purring along motorways quite happily. At the moment, we love her so much, we could hug her! She's brought us in to our first pitstop, at Thun, in Switzerland, in good form (and , incidentally, far ahead of a lot of other teams...but we've got to keep reminding ourselves that this isn't a race!)
We head off to Sauze d'Oux tomorrow, around perrilous Alpine passes, with few safety barriers!

Our gorgeous gal (oh alright, car) Christine has had a bit of a makeover and, truth be told, she looks fantastic!! ...She has scrubbed up a treat (thanks to those lovely boys at Stripes in Poole). Christine now loves cruising the streets and is getting fit for her long slog from Lille to Barcelona, taking in seven countries, in just eight days time. She's very proud of her Me-Mo stickers and can't wait to slap her Wacky Rally ones on too-but is probably going to have to wait until we reach Lille for that part of her makeover.

It's amazing what a bit of a primp can do for a gal...she now looks a million dollars (instead of the 250 quid we paid for her...Oh-kindly donated by Helen -my co-driver's-husband).

Here’s our trusty banger, a J Reg Peugeot 309, bought for £250 from William, a driving instructor, who assures us that ‘Christine’ (anyone else seen the John carpenter film?-a so-bad-that-it’s-good-sort-of-old-movie about a car that kills people it takes a dislike to.....yikes!) has ‘another 100,000 miles in her’...Well, we’re certainly going to be testing her out on our Barmy to Barcelona Wacky Rally in September, in aid of Stallcombe House Trust (www.stallcombehouse.co.uk) driving from Lille, Northern France to Barcelona, taking in seven countries. Hi

Ruthie from Me-Mo (short for ‘Me-Motor’) here…I’d just like to introduce myself to you and give you a little background information into why and how Me-Mo was formed, in July 2007.

I’d been listening to a radio report about women and their cars and about how the majority of women hate taking their cars in to be serviced or repaired. Many women feel that they’re going to be ripped off in the process and that the whole garage environment is not very ‘girl friendly’ (in fact, one woman in the report even said that, if she heard a suspicious noise coming from under the bonnet…she turned the car radio up to drown it out!)…It started me thinking about women and the motor industry generally and how underrepresented us gals are, when it comes to just about all aspects of the motor trade.

I’d noticed that some guys’ sites were selling ‘Pink’ items (usually under a section named ‘Pink’….!) ..it seemed like people were starting to wake up to the fact that women want something more than the mundane black and grey accessories usually on offer…But why only pink?! (Had Henry T. Ford been resurrected but this time around told us that ‘we can have any car (accessory) we like as long as it’s pink?!)

Having three children (one suffering from autism and epilepsy and one recently recovered from Chronic Fatigue Syndrome) I decided to get to work from my kitchen table phoning suppliers and manufacturers from all over the world…the selection of goodies we have on offer at the moment are just the start of a whole range that I hope will make women feel better about their personal space within their cars….Happy Driving!!
